Pipe Major
- Geoffrey Hallberg
Geoffrey began his piping
in Dunedin at the age of 13, being taught by Don Smith, Mark McNoe, Brian
Switalla and Airdrie Stewart. Geoffrey has competed with
many successes in the solo-piping scene, with South Island, Otago, and
Southland Championships being awarded to him. The most prestigious win
was in 2001 at Christchurch when Geoffrey won the Silver Chanter - an open
event for March, Strathspey and Reel playing.

In 1990 he started playing
with the City of Dunedin Junior Pipe band, which won the New Zealand Grade 4
Championship in 1991. From here Geoffrey
progressed to the Senior Dunedin band and was a member while the band was
the top South Island Grade 1 band.
In 1997 Geoffrey was
invited to join the New Zealand Police Pipe Band, which was then the current New Zealand Champion band (while he was still living in Dunedin). Whilst with the band
he had the opportunity to travel to Scotland to compete at the World Pipe
Band Championships, 1997-1999, gaining a 7th place overall in 1998
and 5th in the piping section. The New Zealand Police Pipe Band also travelled to the USA in 1997, gaining the South American Grade 1 Champion
band title, and returned in 2001. In 2002 Geoffrey was asked
to lead the City of Dunedin Pipe Band. As the Pipe Major of the band he has
developed a very strong contesting band which took first place at the Grade
2 New Zealand Championships in 2003, 2007 and 2008. The Band was promoted to Grade 1 in 2008.
