The Band was formed in 1898 and is the
second oldest Pipe Band in New Zealand (and possibly the Southern Hemisphere),
with the City of Invercargill Caledonian Pipe Band formed in 1897.
Formed as the Dunedin Pipe Band, the Band became known as the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band before World War One.
In the 1950's the Band merged with the Burns Pipe Band which had been formed during World War Two, mainly from Home Guard personnel. The merged bands took the name City of Dunedin Highland Pipe Band.
In the 1990's the Band became known as the City of Dunedin Pipe Band.

In the 1960's Pipe Major Fergus Mathieson established the Boys
Band as a "feeder" unit for the Senior Band. At about this time, female
members also began to join both bands. Over the years the Boys Band has
been known by a number of names, including the Junior Band.
On the occasion of the Band's Centennial and the 150th
Anniversary of the Scottish Settlement of Otago and Southland in 1998, both City of Dunedin and Invercargill Caledonian bands were invited to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo as guest performers. In 2003 the Band was again invited to the Tattoo as a supporting band.
Also in 2003, the Band won the Grade 2 New Zealand Championship at the National Pipe Band Championships at Christchurch. This win was repeated in 2007 at Dunedin, and Papakura in 2008; and the Band was subsequently promoted to Grade 1.
