The City of Dunedin Pipe Band
was formed in 1898, and is the second oldest band in the
southern hemisphere, drawing its membership from Balclutha,
Roxburgh, and the greater Dunedin area.

Under the current leadership of
Pipe Major Geoffrey Hallberg, the band has achieved a perfect
unbeaten record in all major South Island contests and also took
the Grade Two title at the 2003 National Contest. For this
achievement the band was granted the freedom of the Dunedin city
by the mayor.
The Band also performs at various
city council organised functions throughout the year and has been a
major feature at the New Years Eve festivities held in the
Octagon each year.
The band has also featured on the
world stage in 1998 and again in 2003 performing at the
Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland - a highlight for every
playing member.
Members of the City of Dunedin Band are active in assisting and training other bands in the group.
